We have all gotten emails that were sent to a large distribution list and every other recipient is visible to us.
This happens when all recipients were listed as the main recipient of the email or CC’d.
It can look something like this:
This is problematic for a few reasons.
- It exposes every other email address to all other recipients, which many people don’t appreciate as it is a privacy breach.
- It can sometimes force us to scroll down many pages to get to the actual email message content. As emails are often read on the smaller screens, of tablets and phones, this can be a jumbled mess.
- If other recipients “reply all” it can put us into that “group email death spiral” where every reply from every other recipient will hit our inbox.
The answer is simple.
When emailing a large group:
- Use YOUR email address as the main recipient.
- BCC all other recipients.
That way, all recipients only see your email and theirs.
Everyone’s privacy is protected, and the emails look much less cluttered with email addresses at the top… and all the recipients still see your email blast.
