Parents of teenagers – I urge you to take an inventory of the apps and activity on your teens’ phones. I do much tech consulting in my daily work and many parents would be shocked to learn what their teens are doing with their phones.
I recently was hired to inventory two teenagers’ phones and the parents were devastated.
Our children have phones for OUR convenience. Data plans, which are very expensive, and give web access are NOT needed to make calls or to text your children. So for parental purposes, DATA PLANS are not necessary.
If your children have data plans (web access) on their phones, then they have the entire world wide web in their pockets. This is extremely dangerous.
The advice I give clients:
1) Children who are not driving do not need a WEB enabled smartphone.
2) Parents should have all usernames and passwords to all applications / websites. This is on their phones, tablets, notebooks, etc. If your children refuse, confiscate the phone/device for an extended period of time until they comply.
3) Parents must give permission before a “friend” is added on any app.
4) Call your cellular and cable companies and ask them about parental controls. These are a great way to limit inappropriate apps and information getting to their phones and other devices.
5) Your home routers have security features as well. Learn about them.
6) Take your teenagers’ phones/devices and do a detailed inventory of the applications on it, and the people they are communicating with. If your children refuse, confiscate the phone for an extended period of time until they comply.
7) Are they uploading photos? Do these photos contain GPS location information? This is a serious mistake.
8) Are they downloading photos? Do you know the people in those photos?
This may cause friction, but it is well worth it based on what I am seeing on clients’ children’s cell phones.
