Chris Whalen, CPA Note: The IRS Online tools can be very frustrating. Most of my clients give me a Power of Attorney so I can do this research for them. Please reach out to me if you do not have success using the online tools.

If you’re an individual taxpayer, you can now use this tool to view:

  • Your payoff amount, updated for the current calendar day
  • The balance for each tax year for which you owe
  • Up to 18 months of your payment history

Please note:

  • Your balance will update no more than once every 24 hours, usually overnight.
  • Once you view your balance, we recommend that you make a note of the amount before selecting your payment option.
  • Allow at least two business days after making an electronic payment for it to appear in the payment history. (Allow two weeks if paying by mail.)

In addition to viewing your balance and payment information, you can also:

  • Make a tax payment through one of the available electronic payment options, or
  • Get various Form 1040-series transcript types online through the Get Transcript tool without having to log in again

You will need the following information and resources available to register for this service:

  • Social Security Number
  • Date of birth
  • Filing status and mailing address from latest tax return
  • Access to an email account
  • Personal account number from a credit card, mortgage, home equity loan, home equity line of credit or car loan
  • A mobile phone with your name on the account
  • This tool is available:
    • Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. ET
    • Saturday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET
    • Sunday, 6 p.m. to midnight ET
