Many of you know that one of my tax specialties is traveling medical professionals: Nurse, Doctors, Therapists, etc.
There is a pervasive rumor that travel nurses should claim exempt on income tax withholding.
There is never a time when you should claim EXEMPT on a W4 form for federal or state income taxes.
You are never exempt from federal tax and never exempt from state taxes unless, of course, that state does not have an individual income tax.
If you are working in a non-resident state, then you can claim the taxes paid to that state on your resident state tax return.
Travel Medical Professionals are paying thousands of dollars in late payment penalties because of this.
